Network Rail has launched an apprenticeship scheme that will cost £30 million over the next five years.
It is the biggest scheme of its kind ever seen in the UK, with 1,000 17 to 19 year olds to be recruited in groups of 200 between now and 2010.
The three-year course sees young apprentices given a solid grounding in engineering, with NVQs to be attained at levels two and three as well as a Btec National Award technical certificate.
Young hopefuls who complete the course are guaranteed a job in maintenance with Network Rail.
"The scheme provides a fantastic opportunity for the successful applicants who will play a key role in helping to rebuild our railway," Network Rail's deputy CEO, Iain Coucher, told Personnel Today.
Mr Coucher added that the scheme demonstrates the company's commitment to investing in the next generation of railway workers.
