University and college lecturers and school teachers could strike over government proposals to reform their pensions.
Lecturers union Natfhe, which is balloting its members on possible industrial action today, explained that the reforms to raise the retirement age from 60 to 65 would cost their members tens of thousands of pounds.
Natfhe general secretary Paul Mackney said: "Not everyone can have the energy and health to work beyond 60.
"Natfhe wants lecturers and others to have choices about when to retire, not financial pressure to work until they drop."
NUT members could also walk out in protest at the raised retirement age, which it calculates would cost £60,000 per teacher in pension entitlements.
The strike, which could coincide with action from 1.4 million other public sector workers, is likely to take place in the middle of an expected general election campaign on April 14.
