Salaries in key IT areas increased last year after sharp declines in the previous year, a major new report by management consultancy Foote Partners has found.
The survey of 45,000 IT staff and 1,860 employers in North America and Europe attributed the increases to employer concerns about retaining key staff and a loss of confidence in outsourcing deals.
Pay for networking skills rose by six per cent, while messaging/groupware rose by 4.5 per cent, Computer Weekly reports.
This compares favourably to a six per cent and 12 per cent decline respectively in 2003.
David Foote, president and chief research officer at Foote Partners, commented: "IT decision makers have lately become less inclined to play the offshoring or outsourcing card when under pressure."
"They are looking instead for ways to keep A-team players from jumping ship and, according to our research, that is showing up in pay rises for premium skills."
