Williams driver Ralf Schumacher proved the bookmakers wrong to claim a surprise pole position for Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.
Britain's Jenson Button was less than seven hundredths of a second behind the German at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit.
The German nipped round the 4.361km track in one minute 12.275 seconds.
The pole was Schumacher's fifth of his career and Williams' first since Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya at the German Grand Prix last August.
Renaults driver Italian Jarno Trulli was third quickest and starts on the second row with Montoya. His team-mate is in fifth.
Schumacher said: "We have clearly been struggling for the last three or four races, so it's going to be a tough one, and with Jenson on my tail it's going to be even tougher.
"We will try our best and maybe I can repeat what I did a few of years ago [in 2001 when he won]. We will see."
Ralf's big brother, Ferrari's six-times world champion Michael Schumacher, was down in a lowly sixth place.
Michael was 1.080 secs slower than Ralf. |
