British Airways is to introduce new sick leave rules as part of a deal to prevent industrial action by workers.
The airline is to implement a sick leave policy that gives managers greater powers to monitor employees' absence.
BA and unions agreed a pay deal for more than 10,000 ground staff to avert a strike, which would have created travel chaos during the August bank holiday weekend.
The deal includes awarding staff a back-dated 8.5 per cent pay rise and a £1,000 bonus in return for a strict sick leave policy that hopes to reduce average sick days from 17 to 10. Individual managers will also be granted greater powers to monitor employees.
A spokesman on behalf of BA said: "Broadly speaking, it is looking at how we monitor and manage sickness at the company and getting some consistency across what is a large and complex organisation."
BA hopes to save around £30 million per year by introducing the new sick leave policy.
