Employees taking days off sick represents a greater burden that stress-related absence, a new poll suggests.
According to the survey of 207 HR managers by HRG, found that 51 per cent thought that sickies cost the most in terms of people management, while just over two-fifths (42 per cent) believe that stress-related absence costs more.
A further five per cent cited major injuries, while two per cent suggested minor injuries represented the biggest cost.
Ben Willmott from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development told HRG that the number of HR professionals most concerned by sickies was "surprisingly high".
"[This] shows how important it is to get absence in general right. A prescriptive approach to tackling non-genuine absence could well persecute those who are ill which in turn could lead to a fall in motivation," he stated.
"Many of the issues that create both stress related absence and sickies are connected with poor people management." |
