Martina Navratilova showed that the years have not taken their toll with a comprehensive victory over Catalina Castano at Wimbledon.
The 47-year-old was playing her first singles match at the All England Championships for ten years, but still had too much in the locker for Colombian opponent.
Nine-time champion Navratilova raced to a 6-0 6-1 win over her 102-ranked opponent, and only appeared in any trouble in the final games of the contest.
Castano has only played four matches on grass throughout her career, and her inexperience showed against a player who arguably has more mastery over the surface than anyone else in the game.
She finally got on the scoreboard in the 12th game of the second set, and gained a break point against the American in the final game before Navratilova closed out the match.
It's not about age," Navratilova said after the win.
"Do what you love and love what you do."
Meanwhile, Britain's Amanda Janes threatened to pull off one of the shocks of the tournament so far after taking the first set against Japanese 11th seed Ai Sugiyama on Court 3.
But the 26-year-old Brit could not hold out and eventually went down 3-6 6-2 6-3 after a rain delay appeared to upset her rhythm. |
