Barclays is set to cut around 800 back-office jobs, including some in human resources, as part of a shake-up of its UK operations.
However, in a bid to improve customer relations, Barclays, plans to recruit an additional 1000 new staff to its branch network throughout the UK.
The shake-up follows the merger of three of the bank's UK divisions earlier this year. The cuts in middle management and support staff aim to reduce the duplication of posts within these areas.
Speaking to the Financial Times, Roger Davis, chief executive of Barclays' UK banking division stressed that customers needed to be the main focus for the bank.
He added: "Customer satisfaction in the banking industry generally has not been as high as we would like and they have pointed to a lack of personal attention and a lack of feeling valued."
The bank earned £3.85 billion in 2003 and is currently the third-largest bank in the UK. |
